Came in with chronic lower back pain after years of office work. Dr. Patel actually listened, ran a proper assessment, and built a plan around my schedule. Six weeks in and I'm sleeping through the night again. The clinic itself is calm and welcoming.

Tore my ACL in a soccer game and was told my season was over. Tanvir built me a return-to-play programme that pushed but never broke me. Back on the pitch — stronger than before. Honest, expert, no upsell. Cannot recommend enough.

Sciatica had me dreading every car ride. Dr. Reid was the first person to actually find the root issue and explain it in plain language. Three weeks of treatment and I'm back to long drives without flinching. Direct insurance billing was a nice bonus.

Frozen shoulder had me unable to reach overhead for over a year. Fereshteh ran a proper differential and got me on a manual-therapy plus loading plan. Range of motion is back to within five degrees of my good side. Real expertise, no rushed sessions.

Post-partum pelvic and lower back pain — felt dismissed everywhere else. Gary took the time to actually map what was going on and built a programme around being a new mom. I can lift my baby pain-free again. Genuinely changed my year.

Knee replacement at 58 — surgeon recommended Physio2Health and I'm grateful. Properly graded loading, weekly check-ins, and an honest conversation about timelines. Walking 5 km comfortably eight weeks in. Best money I've ever spent on my body.

What is acupuncture?

Fine-needle therapy, calibrated to your symptoms and goals.

Acupuncture uses ultra-fine, single-use needles placed along specific meridian or trigger points to modulate pain, reduce inflammation, and reset the nervous system. At Physio2Health you'll see a licensed acupuncturist who blends classical Traditional Chinese Medicine with modern dry-needling where appropriate.

  • Hands-on care. Manual therapy, dry needling, and modalities tailored to your assessment — not a one-size protocol.
  • A real plan. Exercise prescription, progress markers, and honest timelines you can actually follow.
  • Direct insurance billing. We bill most major plans on your behalf, so you can focus on recovery, not paperwork.

Acupuncture FAQ

The questions our Richmond Hill patients ask most.

Straight answers — no jargon, no upsell.

What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to influence the nervous system, reduce pain signalling, and improve local circulation. From a modern medical perspective it stimulates the release of endorphins and modulates muscle and fascia tone; from a traditional perspective it helps restore the body's energetic balance. Most patients feel a deep, settling sensation rather than pain.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are about the width of a human hair — far thinner than the needles used for blood work or injections. Most people feel a brief tap or a dull heaviness at the site, sometimes called the "deqi" sensation. Patients are often surprised by how relaxing the session is; many fall asleep on the table.

How many sessions will I need?

Acute issues often respond within 3 to 6 sessions, while chronic pain and stress-related concerns typically need 6 to 12 weekly visits before tapering. Your acupuncturist gives you an honest estimate after the first visit and reviews progress every few sessions. We never stretch a plan to fill the calendar.

What conditions does acupuncture treat?

It's most commonly used for musculoskeletal pain — back, neck, shoulder, knee — as well as headaches and migraines, sports injuries, sciatica, TMJ, plantar fasciitis, and tendinopathies. It's also widely used for stress, anxiety, sleep disturbance, digestive issues, and menstrual or fertility concerns. If you're unsure whether your concern is a fit, ask during your assessment.

Are the needles safe and sterile?

We use single-use, pre-sterilised, disposable needles that come sealed from the manufacturer and are discarded into a sharps container after every patient. Needles are never reused. All our acupuncturists are registered with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO) and follow strict clean-needle technique.

What should I wear or do before my appointment?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can roll up past the knees and elbows. Eat a light meal an hour or two beforehand — avoid coming in on an empty stomach or right after a heavy meal. Skip strenuous workouts, alcohol, and caffeine for a few hours after treatment so the body can fully relax into the response.

How long is an acupuncture session?

Your initial assessment runs a full 60 minutes — health history, examination, and a first treatment. Follow-up sessions are typically 45 minutes, with about 20 to 30 of those minutes spent resting with needles in place. We never double-book, so the full appointment is yours.

Can acupuncture help with anxiety, stress and sleep?

Yes — this is one of acupuncture's strongest applications. Treatment shifts the nervous system out of fight-or-flight and into a parasympathetic, restorative state, which lowers cortisol, calms racing thoughts, and improves sleep quality. Most patients feel noticeably calmer within the first two or three sessions.

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

Both use the same thin filiform needles, but the approach differs. Dry needling is a Western technique focused on releasing tight muscle trigger points, usually performed by a physiotherapist. Traditional acupuncture treats the whole person using meridian-based point selection. Both have their place — your practitioner will recommend the best fit for your concern.

Do I need a referral or is it covered by insurance?

No referral is needed — acupuncture is a direct-access regulated profession in Ontario. Most extended-health plans cover acupuncture, and we direct-bill Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, Green Shield, Desjardins and others. We confirm coverage before your appointment so there are no surprises.

Can acupuncture be combined with physiotherapy?

Absolutely — many of our patients alternate between the two, or do both in the same week. Acupuncture calms pain and reduces muscle tension, which makes the manual therapy and exercise side of physiotherapy more productive. Our practitioners share notes so the two plans support each other instead of overlapping.

How soon will I notice results?

Many people feel a shift after the first session — looser muscles, calmer mind, often a deep sleep that night. For pain conditions, expect meaningful change by the third or fourth visit. Chronic concerns build more gradually as the body retrains; we'll review progress with you every few sessions to be sure the plan is working.
