Came in with chronic lower back pain after years of office work. Dr. Patel actually listened, ran a proper assessment, and built a plan around my schedule. Six weeks in and I'm sleeping through the night again. The clinic itself is calm and welcoming.

Tore my ACL in a soccer game and was told my season was over. Tanvir built me a return-to-play programme that pushed but never broke me. Back on the pitch — stronger than before. Honest, expert, no upsell. Cannot recommend enough.

Sciatica had me dreading every car ride. Dr. Reid was the first person to actually find the root issue and explain it in plain language. Three weeks of treatment and I'm back to long drives without flinching. Direct insurance billing was a nice bonus.

Post-partum pelvic and lower back pain — felt dismissed everywhere else. Gary took the time to actually map what was going on and built a programme around being a new mom. I can lift my baby pain-free again. Genuinely changed my year.

What are medical support braces?

Bracing built around your injury, not pulled off a shelf.

Medical-grade bracing is a precision tool, not an off-the-shelf purchase. Fereshteh assesses your injury, range of motion and the activities you need to support — then fits the right brace for knee, ankle, wrist, back or post-surgical use.

  • Hands-on care. Manual therapy, dry needling, and modalities tailored to your assessment — not a one-size protocol.
  • A real plan. Exercise prescription, progress markers, and honest timelines you can actually follow.
  • Direct insurance billing. We bill most major plans on your behalf, so you can focus on recovery, not paperwork.

Medical Support Braces FAQ

Common questions about medical support braces.

Straight answers about fitting, insurance, daily wear and how the right brace actually supports recovery.

What is a medical support brace?

A medical support brace is a clinical-grade device prescribed and fitted to stabilise an injured or vulnerable joint, offload painful structures, and protect healing tissue. Unlike pharmacy sleeves, it's matched to your specific injury, anatomy and activity level by a registered clinician. Angela uses brace systems built for measurable support — hinges, straps and rigidity tuned to your diagnosis.

What types of braces does Physio2Health fit?

We fit knee braces (including ACL, ligament and OA unloader), ankle stirrups and lace-up supports, wrist and thumb splints, lumbar and SI back braces, and post-surgical immobilisers such as ROM knee braces, shoulder slings and walker boots. If your surgeon or sports medicine doctor has recommended a specific brand or model, Angela can usually source and fit it.

Who needs a brace?

Bracing is most useful after an acute injury (sprain, ligament tear, fracture), following surgery, or when a joint keeps giving way — recurring ankle sprains, an unstable knee, a wrist that won't settle. It's also used to protect arthritic joints, to safely return to sport, or to control movement while strength is being rebuilt. The goal is always to support, not replace, your own recovery.

How is the right brace chosen for my injury?

Angela starts with a physiotherapy assessment — your diagnosis, imaging or surgical report if relevant, range of motion, instability tests and the activities you need to return to. From there she selects the level of support (sleeve, hinged, rigid, post-op), the right size based on circumferential measurements, and the model that best fits your anatomy. The brace is matched to your injury, not the other way around.

How does the fitting appointment work and how long does it take?

Plan on about 45 to 60 minutes. The session covers your history and assessment, measurement of the joint, brace selection and a hands-on fitting where Angela adjusts straps, hinges and stops with you standing, sitting and walking. You'll leave wearing the brace correctly, with written instructions on don/doff, wear schedule and care.

Are medical braces covered by insurance?

Most extended health plans in Canada cover medical bracing under "medical supplies," "orthotic devices" or "durable medical equipment," especially when fitted by a registered physiotherapist. We direct-bill Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, Green Shield, Desjardins and many others, and provide the receipt, fitter credentials and product codes your insurer needs. We confirm your coverage before the appointment so there are no surprises.

Can I exercise or play sport with a brace?

Yes — many of our braces are designed specifically for return-to-sport. Functional knee braces (ACL/PCL), ankle stirrups, wrist splints and back supports are routinely worn for running, hockey, basketball, skiing, weight training and labour-intensive work. Angela will tell you which activities are safe at each stage and when the brace is helping rather than holding you back.

Book your fitting →

How tight should a brace feel?

Snug and secure, but never pinching or cutting off circulation. You should feel supported through the joint without tingling, numbness, colour change in the fingers/toes, or sharp pressure points. Angela teaches you the strap order and tension at the fitting and shows you how to adjust through the day as swelling changes.

Book your fitting →

How long should I wear the brace each day?

It depends on the brace and the stage of recovery. Post-surgical braces are often worn most of the day for the first weeks, then weaned. Sport and instability braces are typically worn only for the activity or aggravating tasks. You'll leave the fitting with a written wear schedule tailored to your case, and Angela reviews it at each follow-up.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed to book a fitting with a registered physiotherapist in Ontario. However, some insurance plans require a doctor's prescription before reimbursing a brace — we'll check your policy before the appointment and let you know if a quick note from your physician or surgeon will help. If your surgeon has already recommended a specific brace, bring the note with you.

Book your fitting →

How do I clean and care for my brace?

Most sleeves, straps and liners can be hand-washed in cold water with mild soap and air-dried flat — never the dryer, which warps the materials. Hinges and rigid frames should be wiped down with a damp cloth and kept free of grit. Check straps and Velcro every few weeks for wear; bring the brace back any time it loosens, rubs or feels different and Angela will refit or replace parts as needed.

Book your fitting →

When should I stop wearing the brace?

A brace is meant to bridge you back to confident, unsupported movement — not to be worn forever. Once strength, range of motion and stability return, Angela will progressively wean you out of it, often keeping it for high-risk activities only (contact sport, long hikes, heavy lifting). Stopping too early invites re-injury; staying in it too long can slow muscle recovery, which is why the plan is reviewed at every follow-up.
