What are compression stockings?

A precise medical device, measured and fitted right.

Compression stockings are a precise medical device — too tight is uncomfortable, too loose does nothing. Fereshteh measures your leg, prescribes the correct compression class, and fits the right size so the stockings actually work for circulation, swelling and recovery support.

  • Hands-on care. Manual therapy, dry needling, and modalities tailored to your assessment — not a one-size protocol.
  • A real plan. Exercise prescription, progress markers, and honest timelines you can actually follow.
  • Direct insurance billing. We bill most major plans on your behalf, so you can focus on recovery, not paperwork.

Compression Stockings FAQ

Common questions about compression stockings.

Plain answers about how compression stockings actually work, who should wear them, and what to expect at fitting.

What are medical-grade compression stockings?

Medical-grade compression stockings are specially engineered hosiery that apply graduated pressure to the leg — strongest at the ankle and easing as they move up — to help blood return to the heart. Unlike drugstore "support socks," they're calibrated to a precise pressure rating in mmHg and require professional measurement to work safely. Fereshteh prescribes and fits them based on your circulation, leg shape and what you're treating.

Who benefits from compression stockings?

They help anyone whose legs ache, swell, or feel heavy by the end of the day — including patients with varicose or spider veins, chronic venous insufficiency, edema, lymphedema, and a history of DVT. They're also routinely prescribed for long flights, pregnancy-related swelling, post-surgical recovery, and people who stand or sit for long hours such as nurses, teachers, hairstylists and office workers.

What does compression class mean?

Compression is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and grouped into classes. 15–20 mmHg is mild — used for tired, achy legs, mild swelling, travel and pregnancy. 20–30 mmHg is moderate (medical class I) — used for varicose veins, moderate edema, post-sclerotherapy and DVT prevention. 30–40 mmHg is firm (class II) — used for severe venous disease, lymphedema and post-thrombotic syndrome, and typically requires a physician's recommendation.

How are compression stockings measured and fitted?

Fittings are done first thing in the morning, before any swelling sets in, so the measurements reflect your true leg shape. Fereshteh takes multiple circumferences — ankle, calf, knee, and thigh if needed — plus leg length, and combines those with your medical history to choose the correct compression class, length (knee-high, thigh-high or pantyhose) and brand. The appointment takes about 30 minutes.

How often should I wear them?

For most conditions, put them on first thing in the morning before you stand up, wear them through your active day, and take them off before bed. They work by counteracting gravity, so they're most effective when you're upright. Unless your physician has specifically prescribed 24-hour wear (rare — usually only after certain surgeries), nighttime wear isn't necessary and can be uncomfortable.

Will they help with varicose veins and leg swelling?

Yes — compression stockings are first-line conservative treatment for both. They support weakened vein walls, improve venous return, and visibly reduce swelling within days for most patients. They won't erase existing varicose veins, but they slow progression, ease the heaviness and aching, and lower the risk of complications such as skin changes or ulcers.

Are compression stockings covered by insurance?

Most extended-health plans in Canada cover medical-grade compression stockings (typically 20–30 mmHg and above) under "medical supplies" or "durable medical equipment," usually one to two pairs per year. A doctor's prescription is normally required for the claim. We provide a detailed receipt with the compression class, diagnosis code and practitioner credentials so you can submit to Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, Green Shield and others.

Do I need a doctor's prescription?

You don't need a prescription to be fitted — you can book the assessment directly with Fereshteh as a Registered Physiotherapist. However, you'll almost always need a physician's prescription to submit the cost to your insurance, especially for 20–30 mmHg or higher. If you don't have one yet, we'll walk you through what to ask your family doctor for so the claim goes through smoothly.

How long does a pair of stockings last?

With daily wear and proper care, a quality pair holds its compression for about 4 to 6 months. After that the elastic fibres fatigue and the graduated pressure becomes unreliable — the stockings may still feel snug but no longer deliver the medical effect. This is why most insurers approve two pairs per year, and why we recommend rotating two pairs to extend their life.

Can I sleep in compression stockings?

Generally no. When you're lying flat, gravity is no longer working against your circulation, so the compression isn't doing anything useful — and prolonged wear at night can irritate skin or restrict circulation if the fit isn't perfect. The only exception is a specific medical instruction after surgery or in advanced venous disease, in which case lower-pressure night stockings may be prescribed.

How do I put them on and take them off without struggling?

The trick is to put them on before you get out of bed, when legs are at their slimmest and skin is dry. Turn the stocking inside-out down to the heel, slip your foot in, then carefully roll it up the leg in small sections rather than yanking from the top. Rubber dishwashing gloves give you grip and protect the fabric, and donning aids (butler frames, silk slippers) make a real difference for thigh-highs or class II — Fereshteh demonstrates the technique at your fitting.

How do I wash and care for them?

Wash them after every wear — body oils break down the elastic fibres faster than the compression itself. Use lukewarm water and a mild detergent (a lingerie wash is ideal), either by hand or on a delicate cycle inside a mesh bag. Always air-dry flat or on a towel — never wring, tumble-dry, iron, or hang in direct sunlight, and skip fabric softener and bleach, which destroy the elasticity.
